Our focus is on developing sheep that combine strong performance, durability, and efficiency for today's sheep producers.
About Us
Hughes Newford
The Foundation
Hughes Newford was established in 1971 following the division of a large family ranch into three separate operations. Since its founding, the ranch has remained family-owned and operated, beginning with Curt and Tommy Hughes.
Today, Betty Hughes Sampsel and her husband John continue the family legacy alongside their son Jeff and daughter-in-law Dawnita. The ranch is now supported by five generations, with Curtis and Clella Sampsel already taking an active role in daily ranch life.
The Hughes family's connection to Targhee sheep dates back to the 1950s when Curt Hughes recognized the potential of the newly developed breed. For generations, Targhee sheep have remained a cornerstone of the operation, valued for their wool quality, maternal instincts, and ability to thrive in Montana's demanding range conditions.
Sampsel Livestock
The Next Generation
Built on the foundation of Hughes Newford, Sampsel Livestock represents the next generation of the family's commitment to registered Targhee sheep.
Jeff and Dawnita Sampsel entered the registered sheep industry shortly after their marriage when an opportunity arose to purchase foundation ewes from Sieben Livestock. What began with 60 coming two-year-old Targhee ewes has grown into a breeding program focused on producing hardy, productive sheep that combine practical range performance with strong genetic merit.
Today, Sampsel Livestock continues to build upon decades of family knowledge while focusing on the future of the Targhee breed through careful selection, performance, and practical management.
Our Genetics
Established through generations. Proven by performance.
Our sheep are developed in the rugged foothills of Central Montana and expected to perform in real-world conditions. Deep snow, predators, harsh winters, and challenging terrain are not obstacles, they are part of the selection process.
We prioritize:
Maternal strength
Structural soundness
Longevity
Performance
Adaptability
Functional range genetics
Annual Buck Offering
Our goal is simple: produce sheep that work for commercial producers and seedstock operations alike.
Each fall, we offer a select group of Registered Targhee bucks developed under practical Montana range conditions. Our breeding stock reflects generations of selection for productivity, soundness, and longevity.
